"Red Shoes" is an abstract homage to my great aunt Judith, a vibrant spirit whose creative legacy profoundly influenced my artistic journey. Created in 2001 during my time in art school, this oil painting reflects the deep connection I felt with her, despite the miles that separated us. The vivid red shoes symbolize youth, vitality, and an indomitable spirit—qualities that defined Judith, even as she grew frail in her later years.

 

In this piece, I depict her seated in a chair, framed by a rich bookshelf filled with stories and wisdom, with one of her husband Sam Bornstein's paintings gracing the wall above. The translucent layers of the composition reflect the delicate interplay between memory and presence, capturing Judith’s youthful heart that continues to resonate within me. This work serves as a celebration of her artistic spirit and the enduring bond we share, transcending the boundaries of time and space.
