Artist Statement
These two paintings, "The Waiting Place - One" and "The Waiting Place - Two," embody the duality of our experiences during the COVID-19 pandemic. As with everything in nature there are two sides to every coin. One cannot exist without the other, representing both sides of the equation: those who feared the virus and those who did not. Together, they capture the collective experience of uncertainty and isolation, inspired by the lines outside grocery stores, particularly Costco, where we stood together—yet apart—masked and apprehensive, uncertain of how long we would have to wait.
In these endless lines, fear and scarcity permeated our interactions, as livelihoods were lost and relationships strained. The divide deepened within our communities, separating those with differing beliefs about health and safety, including my own family, where contrasting views led to a personal upheaval that challenged our bonds.
These paintings serve as a meditation on this tumultuous period, a visual reminder of the emotional landscape shaped by fear, division, and the hope for eventual healing as we navigate our way back to connection.
