Artist Statement
This sample size painting sketch was conceived and executed in a rapid two-week timeframe.
I had recieved a call from a past client who purchased a piece from me 10 years prior and asked if I’d be interested in submitting a proposal. I of course said yes, and was determined to win the proposal. I was unanimously selected from ten other artists for the commission awarded in 2010.
The idea for this piece was born over a cup of coffee with a close friend who explained to me that the Canadian constitution is often referred to as a living breathing document; it ebbs and flows to suit the needs of a dynamic ever changing country.
It took me 3 months to paint the full size “living tree”. The original five-panel oil painting, 25’ long by 6.5’ high now adorns the back wall of Calgary's ceremonial courtroom, making it the only painting to hang in a courtroom in Canada. Limited edition prints of this piece are available for purchase.
